ADH Chief Science Officer appointed to national advisory committee
Little Rock, Ark. – Namvar Zohoori, MD, PhD, MPH, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030. Dr. Zohoori is the Chief Science Officer at the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH).
This federal advisory committee consists of nonfederal, independent subject matter experts who are responsible for making recommendations to the HHS Secretary for the development and implementation of the national health promotion and disease prevention objectives for 2030, also known as Healthy People 2030. As a state health department representative, Dr. Zohoori will bring valuable state experience to the Committee’s deliberations.
“It’s an honor for me to be asked to be on this Committee,” Dr. Zohoori said. “We’ve done a lot over the past decade in Arkansas by using the Healthy People objectives in our work here in the state, and the new 2030 objectives will provide important goals for us to work towards into the next decade.”
Dr. Zohoori joined the ADH in 2004. In addition to being the Chief Science Officer, he is an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Public Health. He has worked previously in the areas of public health, nutrition, epidemiology, aging, and chronic diseases in Russia, China, the Philippines, Jamaica, and the United States.
As a member of the advisory committee, he will contribute to the development of recommendations for implementing Healthy People 2030 before, at, and after its launch in order to work toward improvements in the health and well-being of Americans by the end of the decade. The Healthy People initiative began in 1979. The initiative identifies the nation’s disease prevention and health promotion goals and objectives and provides access to reliable data for assessing the health of the nation and its populations.
